Screen-Free Summer Activities: Why Martial Arts Makes a Difference

Summer break is supposed to be a time for kids to stay active, explore new interests, and build lasting memories. However, for many families, summer can quickly turn into long hours spent on phones, tablets, video games, and television. Without the structure of school and organized activities, it becomes easy for children to fall into routines centered around screens and inactivity.

While technology is part of everyday life, too much screen time can negatively impact focus, physical activity, sleep habits, social interaction, and overall development. That is why many parents look for summer activities that keep their children moving, learning, and engaged in a positive environment.

At Ground Control, we see firsthand how martial arts gives kids a healthy outlet during the summer while helping them develop skills that extend far beyond the mats.

Why Screen Time Has Become a Growing Concern

According to the CDC, children ages 8 to 10 now spend an average of about 6 hours per day in front of screens, while teenagers often exceed 7 hours daily outside of schoolwork. At the same time, less than one-quarter of children get the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity.

This imbalance can contribute to lower energy levels, reduced attention spans, poor posture, sleep disruption, and increased stress or anxiety. Summer break often amplifies these habits because routines become less structured and kids have more unmonitored downtime.

This is where our gym steps in. Martial arts provides an alternative that keeps children mentally engaged while also helping them stay physically active.

Martial Arts Gives Kids More Than Exercise

One of the biggest reasons martial arts stands out from other activities is that children are not just running around burning energy. They are learning discipline, structure, and self-control while developing physical skills in a positive environment.

At Ground Control Owing Mills, classes are designed to keep students engaged from start to finish. Kids are constantly moving, listening, practicing technique, and interacting with coaches and classmates. This creates an experience that challenges both the mind and body in healthy ways.

Martial arts also creates a positive social environment where children interact face-to-face instead of sitting alone behind a screen. They become part of a team atmosphere that encourages growth, accountability, and respect.

Some of the biggest benefits include:

  • Improved focus and listening skills

  • Increased physical activity and coordination

  • Better confidence and self-esteem

  • Healthier daily routines and structure

  • Opportunities to build friendships and teamwork

  • Reduced reliance on screens and sedentary habits

  • Stronger discipline and emotional control

  • A positive environment with supportive coaches and peers

These benefits often carry over into school, sports, and life at home long after summer ends. The discipline, improved physical skills, and mental growth aid in overall development at all ages.

Ground Control’s Warrior Camp Gives Kids a Fun and Structured Summer Experience

Ground Control’s Summer Warrior Camp is designed for kids ages 5–13 and provides families with a structured summer camp experience that keeps children active, engaged, and learning throughout the summer break.

Hosted at Ground Control Owings Mills, Warrior Camp combines martial arts training with games, fitness activities, outdoor adventures, leadership development, and team-building exercises in a high-energy and supportive environment. The goal is not only to keep kids moving but also to help them develop confidence, discipline, communication skills, and healthy routines while school is out.

Throughout camp, students are introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, movement drills, conditioning, and self-defense concepts in a fun and age-appropriate way. Kids learn how to work with partners, follow instructions, overcome challenges, and stay active while building confidence in themselves.

One of the biggest advantages of Ground Control’s Summer Warrior Camp is the environment itself. Campers are surrounded by experienced instructors and coaches who work closely with students while creating a positive atmosphere focused on encouragement, teamwork, and personal growth. The camp is designed to help children stay physically and mentally engaged instead of spending long days indoors on screens.

Ground Control Wrestling Club Builds Discipline, Confidence, and Mental Toughness

Ground Control Wrestling Club gives boys and girls in grades 3 through 12 another opportunity to stay active while continuing to develop athletic ability, discipline, and resilience during the offseason and summer months.

Wrestling is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports, teaching athletes how to stay composed under pressure, push through challenges, and improve through consistent effort and repetition. Students develop body control, balance, conditioning, coordination, and mental toughness while learning accountability and work ethic along the way.

The club creates a competitive but supportive team atmosphere where athletes are encouraged to challenge themselves while learning from experienced coaches and training partners. Whether students are completely new to wrestling or looking to sharpen their skills for competition, the program helps athletes grow both on and off the mats.

Wrestling also pairs naturally with martial arts training because it teaches discipline, control, and problem-solving under pressure. Many students find that wrestling helps improve their confidence, focus, and overall athletic performance across multiple sports and activities.

For many young athletes, our Wrestling Club becomes more than just a training program. It becomes an outlet where they build friendships, confidence, resilience, and habits that benefit them in school, sports, and everyday life.
